If you work in a kitchen, you already know the floor is not on your side. Grease, spilled sauce and wet tile turn one wrong step into an injury, and the right pair of slip-resistant shoes is the most important piece of equipment you'll buy for the job.
What makes a shoe truly slip-resistant?
Not all "slip-resistant" shoes are created equal. The term gets used loosely in marketing, but there are real test standards behind it.
Under EN ISO 20345:2011, safety footwear carries one of three slip markings:
| Rating | Surface | Test fluid |
|---|---|---|
| SRA | Ceramic tile | Detergent solution (soapy water) |
| SRB | Steel floor | Glycerol (simulates oil and grease) |
| SRC | Both of the above | Passed both SRA and SRB, the top slip marking under the 2011 standard |
The 2022 edition of EN ISO 20345 simplified this. A ceramic tile test with a soap solution is now a basic requirement for all safety shoes, and the optional SR marking adds a tougher test on ceramic tile with glycerine. You'll still see SRA, SRB and SRC on many shoes certified under the 2011 edition.
Tip: If a shoe just says "slip-resistant" without naming a rating, it may only have been tested on one surface, or not tested at all. In a kitchen with water and oil on the same floor, look for SRC or SR.
Other key features for kitchen shoes
- Oil-proof outsole. Resists breaking down under constant grease exposure.
- Water-resistant upper. Keeps your feet dry when something spills.
- Lightweight construction. You're on your feet for 8 to 12 hours, and a lighter shoe takes less effort with every step.
- Cushioned midsole. Helps reduce fatigue from standing on hard floors. BernCore Foam™ is our cushioned, shock-absorbing midsole foam for exactly this.
- Easy to clean. Smooth, non-porous materials wipe down faster than fabric.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best shoes to wear working in a kitchen?
Look for a named slip rating, an oil-proof outsole, a water-resistant upper and a cushioned midsole. Sneaker-style work shoes like the Nimbus Geneva 408 combine athletic comfort with professional slip protection.
What shoes do kitchen staff wear?
Most professional kitchen staff wear dedicated slip-resistant work shoes or clogs. Lightweight, sneaker-style work shoes with slip-rated outsoles have become a popular alternative to heavier traditional clogs.
How often should you replace kitchen work shoes?
For daily kitchen shifts, plan on every 6 to 12 months. Check the outsole tread monthly; once it's worn smooth, the shoe has lost much of its grip. Our work shoe care guide covers degreasing and drying.
Are steel toe shoes necessary for kitchen work?
Usually not, unless you work in an industrial kitchen or a food processing plant where heavy items can fall. For most restaurant kitchens, slip-resistant work shoes are the standard. Check your employer's requirements.
