Best Slip-Resistant Shoes for Restaurant Workers, Nurses & Service Pros in 2026

Best Slip-Resistant Shoes for Restaurant Workers, Nurses & Service Pros in 2026

Greasy kitchen floors, freshly mopped hospital corridors, spilled drinks on a busy Friday night. If you work in food service, healthcare or hospitality, slip-resistant shoes are part of the uniform. Here's what to look for, and the pairs we'd pick.

According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data analyzed by the National Safety Council, slips, trips and falls are one of the three leading causes of work injuries that lead to days away from work. The right shoes won't dry a wet floor, but they improve your odds of staying upright on one.

What makes a shoe truly slip-resistant

Slip ratings

Under EN ISO 20345:2011, outsoles are tested two ways:

  • SRA: ceramic tile with a detergent solution, like a wet kitchen floor
  • SRB: steel with glycerol, like an oily surface
  • SRC: passes both, the top slip rating under that version of the standard

The 2022 revision makes the wet-tile test a basic requirement and adds an "SR" mark for an extra tile test with glycerine. In the U.S., ASTM F2413-24 introduced SR (dry and wet) and SRO (oily-wet) slip classifications. SPIEZ publishes ASTM, EN ISO and UKCA declarations for its shoes. Ratings vary by model, so check the Declaration of Conformity for yours.

Outsole design

  • Multi-directional lugs channel liquid away from the contact surface
  • Wider channels resist clogging with grease
  • Softer rubber compounds grip better on smooth floors

How to check whether your shoes are slip-resistant

Start with the label or the manufacturer's declaration of conformity: a published slip rating tells you more than any "anti-slip" claim. Then a few quick checks at home. Hold on to a counter while you do them, and never test on stairs.

  1. Wet tile test. Wet a smooth tile floor and walk normally. Any sliding means the shoe isn't good enough for wet work.
  2. Lean test. Stand on the wet surface and slowly lean forward. A good outsole holds you in place.
  3. Tread check. Look at the heel and the ball of the foot. If the pattern is worn flat, the grip is gone.

Caring for your slip-resistant shoes

  • Clean the outsoles weekly. Grease in the tread channels reduces grip.
  • Use a stiff brush to get into the grooves.
  • Replace your shoes when the tread wears flat, not when the uppers give out.
  • Rotate two pairs so each one dries out fully between shifts.
